Ferrari Repair

Ferrari ownership becomes a different world when you truly know how to work on the car

This page documents Ferrari repair and service work performed by Moses Koktsidis, including secondary air injection system work, gearbox mount replacement, spark plug service, exhaust mid pipe related work, rear cradle access, and detailed mechanical inspection carried out with the level of discipline that only comes from decades of hands on experience.

For most owners, Ferrari maintenance can become financially overwhelming very quickly. For Moses, this is different. After more than twenty five years of mechanical work, diagnostics, problem solving, and mastering complex vehicle systems, he is able to perform work that saves enormous money while protecting the integrity of the platform and doing the job to a standard that reflects real skill.

Ferrari California Project

Real Ferrari ownership requires real expertise

From walnut blasting and intake restoration to air conditioning repairs, oil system service, cooling system maintenance, and diagnostics, every step of this Ferrari California project was performed with long-term reliability and preventative maintenance in mind.

Why This Matters

The real cost of owning a Ferrari is often the labor, not just the parts

Exotic ownership becomes intimidating for a lot of people because once a serious issue appears, the labor can become brutal. If a car needs access work, deep disassembly, emissions system repair, ignition service, mounting work, or exhaust related correction, the hours add up fast. On a Ferrari, those hours are expensive. Very expensive.

That is why true mechanical skill changes everything. When you have more than twenty five years of hands on experience, when you understand how systems interact, when you know how to take a vehicle apart carefully, diagnose it correctly, and put it back together with discipline, the economics of ownership become completely different. You are no longer at the mercy of every high dollar labor estimate.

In Moses Koktsidis' case, that experience is not casual. It is the product of decades of real work, deep mechanical understanding, and the kind of elite hands on ability that allows him to take on complex jobs that many owners would never attempt themselves.

Work Performed

Major service and repair areas on this Ferrari project

The work shown on this page reflects meaningful mechanical service, not surface level cosmetic involvement.

Secondary Air Injection System Work

This is one of the more frustrating Ferrari issues an owner can face, especially in areas where emissions compliance matters. When the secondary air injection system develops problems, it can trigger expensive repair paths very quickly. Working through it properly requires patience, access, system understanding, and the willingness to get into the kind of job many people simply pay a shop to deal with at a very high cost.

Gearbox Mount Replacement

Gearbox mounts are one of those components that say a lot about how a car feels when they begin to fail. Once worn, they can affect refinement, mechanical stability, and the overall driving experience. Replacing them correctly is not just a maintenance item. It is part of bringing the platform back to the standard it should have.

Spark Plug Service

Spark plug work sounds routine until you are working on an exotic platform where access, surrounding components, care, and correct reassembly matter. Proper spark plug service is part of protecting performance, combustion quality, and the overall health of the engine.

Exhaust Mid Pipe Related Work

Exhaust work on a Ferrari is never just about sound. It affects system integrity, flow, presentation, and how the mechanical package comes together. Mid pipe related work is part of the larger responsibility of making sure the vehicle is right, not just running.

Mechanical Reality

This is where elite mechanical ability matters

There is a major difference between someone who owns an exotic car and someone who can actually maintain, diagnose, and repair one to a high standard. Moses Koktsidis has spent a lifetime building that skill set. The value of that skill is not theoretical. It shows up directly in the quality of the work and in the amount of money saved by being able to perform major labor intensive jobs personally.

When you have twenty five years of experience behind your hands, you do not approach a Ferrari project the way an amateur would. You approach it with process, confidence, caution, and the knowledge to know what matters and what cannot be overlooked.

Ferrari Gearbox Mount Repair (Front & Rear)

I completed both the front and rear gearbox mounts, starting with the fronts as my initial step. The rear mounts, however, are on an entirely different level—far more complex, time-intensive, and demanding.

The rear gearbox mounts require significantly more effort and experience to properly access and replace. This type of work goes beyond simply replacing parts and reflects a true understanding of how the vehicle is engineered to perform at its highest level.

Ferrari California Service

Walnut Blasting, Intake Restoration & Preventative Maintenance

While performing major service work on this Ferrari California, I decided to address several maintenance items that are often overlooked until they become expensive problems. Since the intake manifold was already removed, it created the perfect opportunity to inspect and service components that are normally buried deep within the engine bay.

The photos shown here demonstrate exactly why walnut blasting is important. Carbon deposits can become substantial even on lower mileage Ferraris because direct injected engines never wash fuel across the intake valves.

One of the most important procedures performed was a complete walnut blasting of the intake valves. Like many modern high performance engines, the Ferrari California uses direct fuel injection. Unlike older port injected engines where gasoline constantly washes over the intake valves, direct injection sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber.

Over time, oil vapors from the crankcase ventilation system accumulate on the intake valves and begin forming hard carbon deposits. As the deposits grow, airflow becomes restricted and engine efficiency begins to suffer. Owners may experience rough idle, hesitation, reduced throttle response, decreased fuel economy, and noticeable power loss.

The before and after images clearly show how carbon buildup restricts airflow. Once walnut blasted, the intake valves were restored to a much cleaner condition, helping return the engine to peak efficiency.

Many Ferrari owners are surprised to learn that carbon buildup can occur even on relatively low mileage vehicles. Time, heat cycles, and crankcase vapors continue to affect intake valves regardless of mileage because fuel never passes over the valves to keep them clean.

Since the intake system was already apart, new intake manifold gaskets were installed during reassembly. Reusing old gaskets on a vehicle of this caliber simply does not make sense. New gaskets help ensure proper sealing and eliminate the possibility of future vacuum leaks.

While the intake manifold was removed, the alternator was inspected and proactively replaced. Accessing the alternator on a Ferrari California requires significant disassembly, making it a logical preventative maintenance item while the engine was already opened for service.

The thermostat was also replaced during this service. Cooling system components are critical on high performance Italian vehicles where operating temperatures must remain tightly controlled. Replacing the thermostat while the intake was removed allowed the work to be completed efficiently while ensuring reliable temperature regulation for years to come.

During the service, the intake manifold was removed, intake valves were walnut blasted, new intake manifold gaskets were installed, and both the thermostat and alternator were proactively replaced while access was available.

These are the types of decisions that come from decades of experience working on complex vehicles. Rather than simply repairing what is broken, the goal is to evaluate the entire system, identify components that are accessible during the repair, and address potential future issues while labor overlap is minimized. This approach saves money, reduces future downtime, and helps preserve the reliability of a vehicle as special as a Ferrari California.

Ferrari California Air Conditioning Service

AC Compressor Failure, Oil Pressure Sensor Leak & Preventative Maintenance

At only 32,000 miles, this Ferrari California developed an air conditioning failure caused by a seized compressor clutch. While many owners assume low mileage automatically means reliability, age, heat cycles, seals, bearings, and mechanical components can still fail over time regardless of mileage.

Once the compressor clutch locked up, the system required a complete and professional repair rather than simply replacing a single component and hoping for the best.

Because compressor failures can introduce contamination into the air conditioning system, the entire system was carefully inspected and flushed. Every accessible seal was replaced, the receiver filter assembly was renewed, and the refrigerant circuit was serviced to ensure long-term reliability.

After repairs were completed, the system was evacuated under deep vacuum to remove moisture and non-condensable gases. The system was then precisely recharged with approximately 1.1 pounds of refrigerant along with PAG 48 compressor oil and ultraviolet dye for future leak detection.

During the repair process, another issue was discovered that many owners would never notice until it became significantly worse. The engine oil pressure sending unit was leaking internally through the sensor body itself.

Accessing and replacing the oil pressure sensor required oil pan removal. The oil pan gasket surfaces were cleaned, inspected, reassembled with a new gasket, and torqued to specification.

Once the repair was completed, the engine was refilled using premium Motul 10W60 racing oil. High-performance Ferrari engines routinely see engine speeds approaching 8,000 RPM, making oil quality critical for lubrication, temperature control, bearing protection, and valve train stability.

This project highlights the difference between simply replacing parts and performing a complete repair. Every system was evaluated as a whole, potential future issues were addressed while access was available, and every component was serviced with long-term reliability in mind.
