Chasing pro football with belief and grit

In 2002, Moses Koktsidis was featured in The Times in a story centered on his pursuit of professional football opportunities. It captured a bold chapter built on discipline, confidence, and the willingness to chase something bigger.

While the article made an error regarding his football background, Moses played football for three years at Lake Central High School. This pursuit was not random, it was built on a real athletic foundation.

Moses Koktsidis

Athlete • Competitor • Dream Chaser

The athlete years of Moses Koktsidis

Long before the businesses, the branding, and the entrepreneurial path, Moses Koktsidis was already driven by competition, intensity, and belief. His athlete years reveal the same qualities that would later define his life and work: heart, toughness, style, determination, and the willingness to pursue something bigger without waiting for permission.

Early athletic story

A relentless competitor with a scorer’s instinct

In high school, Moses Koktsidis was a prolific goal scorer and assisting player on the varsity soccer team. He played with pace, pressure, aggression, and emotion. He was the kind of athlete who could create opportunities, finish chances, and change the energy of a match simply by how hard he competed. He was not passive. He was active, tenacious, and fully involved.

The newspaper clippings from his Lake Central years reflect that impact. Moses appears in multiple game stories with goals and assists, including a performance with both a goal and an assist against Wheeler, another assist in a dominant win over LaPorte, a goal in a victory over Andrean, and an unassisted goal in regional play. The box scores and game recaps back up what those who watched him already knew. He was productive, dangerous, and always around the action.

And yes, this was also back in the era of the long hair, the earrings, and sometimes even the ponytail. Let’s just say Moses was not exactly trying to blend in. Even then, he carried himself like someone who was going to do things his own way, and somehow still make it work.

Athletic build and mindset

Compact, powerful, fearless

At 5'8" and 195 pounds, Moses Koktsidis brought a compact, explosive, high energy athletic presence. He played with toughness, determination, urgency, and heart. Whether on the soccer field or in football pursuit, he carried the kind of edge that comes from refusing to think small. He was aggressive in the right moments, emotional in the best way, and driven by the belief that effort, willpower, and confidence could open doors that other people never even dared to knock on.

The correction

Setting the record straight

While the newspaper feature did a strong job capturing Moses Koktsidis’ ambition and pro football pursuit, it made a significant factual mistake by stating that he had not played football in high school.

In truth, Moses played football for three years at Lake Central High School. That is an important distinction because it shows his journey into pro football opportunities was not a sudden fantasy or random leap. It was part of a broader athletic story that included real football experience, varsity soccer production, and a long established pattern of competitiveness.

The full story is stronger than the article alone. Moses was an athlete with a real base, real training, and a real willingness to keep chasing opportunity beyond what others might have expected.

Soccer • Adversity • Resilience

The Dream Was Real

As a junior, Moses Koktsidis had already started drawing serious attention and receiving multiple collage offers for soccer. What many young athletes hope for was beginning to happen. The dream was real, and the future looked wide open.

But behind the scenes, life was far from easy. At a young age, Moses was dealing with deep family turmoil and painful loss, carrying emotional weight that no young person should have to carry. With so much happening around him, focus began to fade, and the momentum that once seemed unstoppable was interrupted.

The opportunity was there, but the dream was never fully realized. Not because the talent was missing, and not because the heart was not there, but because life sometimes pulls people into battles bigger than sports, bigger than plans, and bigger than what anyone on the outside can truly understand.

Still, that chapter helped shape the man he would become. The toughness, ambition, and relentless drive never left. They simply evolved into something greater, becoming the same fire that would later fuel his businesses, his vision, and his determination to create a life defined not by what was lost, but by what was built.

Pro football pursuit

Scout camp, tryouts, and chasing a bigger shot

In the early 2000s, Moses pursued professional football opportunities during the era when the NFL, CFL, and AFL held free agent combines and scout camp events. It was a unique time in the game, when determined athletes could still get in front of scouts, compete, and try to earn a chance through performance and presence.

That chapter included exposure, workouts, and tryout opportunities connected to the Calgary Stampeders, the Jacksonville Tomcats, and the Quad City Steamwheelers. The Jacksonville Tomcats were part of the AFL, and that whole era reflected something that has always been true about Moses. He was willing to bet on himself, even when the path was not conventional.

That same drive carried into his time with the Lake County Steelers, a semi-pro football team where he continued to compete, prove himself, and stay ready for the next level.

The Lake County Steelers became a major part of that journey. Playing semi-pro football gave Moses the opportunity to stay sharp, travel, compete, and perform under real game pressure while continuing to pursue professional opportunities.

Wearing number 10 for the Steelers, launching punts with his powerful left leg, and being part of that team became one of the most memorable chapters of his football career. It was a time built on discipline, toughness, and the belief that the opportunity could come at any moment.

And yes, the look matched the energy. Long hair. Earrings. Sometimes even the ponytail. It was the kind of style that made it seem like football had somehow cast the lead for a sports movie and Moses just walked into the role naturally. But behind the look was real grit, real preparation, and a very real dream.

Archived sports clippings

The athlete years captured in print

Before business, before brands, and before everything that came later, there were the competitive years. These archived clippings preserve the foundation of Moses Koktsidis as a relentless multi sport athlete, a productive varsity soccer player, and a three year football player at Lake Central, already wired to compete, push forward, and perform under pressure.

During the 1994 and 1995-96 seasons, Lake Central soccer rose to the very top, earning recognition as the #1-3 ranked team in the state of Indiana. Those teams were not just talented, they were built to make a serious championship run. Lake Central captured both sectional and regional titles, but in both years the journey ended one step short, with heartbreaking losses in semi state.

By Moses’ senior year, the dream of finishing that story with a state championship was still alive, but life outside the game had changed everything. That season was filled with deep personal turmoil, loss, and family issues that made it difficult to keep the same level of focus. The talent was there, the team was there, and the dream was real, but the ending that once felt so close was never fully realized.

Even beyond high school, the football chapter continued to leave a mark. These added NFL era articles help tell that part of the story too, showing that the athletic drive never disappeared. They reflect a period where the dream kept stretching forward, where the work, discipline, and belief in what was possible still remained alive. Taken together, these clippings are more than old articles, they are pieces of a much bigger story about resilience, ambition, and the mindset that would later carry into business, leadership, and life.

Soccer

Productive and dangerous

Moses was not just a hard worker on the field. He produced. Goals, assists, pressure, energy, and constant involvement in attack.

Football

Three years at Lake Central

Moses played football for three years in high school, giving him a legitimate foundation that the newspaper article unfortunately misstated.

Identity

Never meant to be ordinary

The long hair, the earrings, the ponytail, and the confidence all reflected the same thing. Moses has always been wired to stand out.

Athlete Story

The Semi-Pro Lake County Steelers Football Season

One phone call opened the door to a beautiful football memory and one unforgettable season wearing number 10.

As soon as the pro scout free agent combines were behind him, and after the newspaper article had been released, Moses received a phone call that he never forgot.

The gentleman on the other end was Bob Crowder, owner and coach of the Lake County Steelers of the Mid-States Football League.

“

Hey Moses, this is Bob Crowder. We see that you're doing great things, and we see you've got a strong leg. We would like to invite you to our team to become our kicker and punter.

Of course, Moses was told he would have to compete for the job.

At his first practice, he kicked the ball out of the building. Instantly, the job was his.

It turned into a great season. It was the only season Moses played with the Lake County Steelers, but it was an amazing time in his life. Wearing number 10 for the Steelers became one of those memories that stayed with him.

I still keep that commemorative helmet the team gave me in my office today.

Every time I see it, it takes me right back to that season — the practices, the road trips, the games, and everything that came with being part of that team.

It is one of those things that means more and more as time goes on, because it reminds me of a very special chapter of my life.

I want to take a moment to thank my coaches and my teammates from that season.

That was such a great experience for me. The opportunity, the trust, the camaraderie — it all meant more than I can really put into words.

Those are memories I will always carry with me, and I’m truly grateful for every single one of them.

One game in particular stood out. It was against the Kane County Eagles.

The Steelers got pummeled that day. The final score was 48 to 7. But even in that loss, Moses put on an arsenal display with his powerful left leg.

In that preseason game, he averaged 53.9 yards on seven punts.

He never forgot how amazing he felt walking away from that performance.

The team traveled to many different places throughout the Midwest. It was a great time in his life, a great experience, and a chapter that still means a lot to him.

Moses still thanks Bob Crowder and all of his teammates from that season. It was a beautiful memory and a very meaningful opportunity.

Football Memory

Number 10

One unforgettable season, a powerful left leg, and a chapter that still stands as a beautiful memory.

The athlete story came first, but the mindset never changed

From varsity soccer, to three years of football at Lake Central, to chasing pro football opportunities through scout camp and tryouts and one year in semi pro football ,the pattern was already there early in the life of Moses Koktsidis. He has always been willing to trust instinct, embrace the hard road, and go after something meaningful before certainty ever arrives. The athlete years did not just build memories. They revealed the same mindset that would later carry into everything else.
