Dubai: The Trip That Wasn’t What It Seemed
What started as a business deal turned into one of the most meaningful moments of my life.
So, I found this Audi Q7 in Dubai. This was the former purchaser Audi Q7 that we have now, and it was black.
There was a company out there, the name was Excellence Limousines. I don't believe they're in business anymore, and that’s the only reason why I’m even saying their name now. At the time though, it looked like a great business. They had good ratings online, a good reputation, and videos on YouTube, so everything seemed legitimate.
I spoke to the guy for about two months.
Then I told myself I was going to go pick up the vehicle. I was going to fly to Dubai, which I had always wanted to do.
I set up shipping with Schumacher Shipping out of California. The plan was to container the vehicle and ship it to California so I could drive it home. There was also an option to bring it into New Jersey or New York, but I specifically wanted California.
Everything looked perfect… on paper.
The gentleman told me the vehicle was in fantastic shape.
So we flew to Dubai.
It was a beautiful trip getting there. We flew Swiss Air, stopped in Switzerland on the way, and honestly, just getting there was an experience on its own.
We got to Dubai and rested the first and second day.
The third day was when we were supposed to go see the vehicle.
The gentleman came to pick me up with a driver and took me out to the outskirts of Dubai, into some strange neighborhoods that looked nothing like the luxury areas we had been staying in.
Right away, something felt off.
He pulled into a yard that had about seven limousines in it.
Every single one of them was in terrible shape.
Right then and there, I knew something wasn’t right.
He dropped me off and told me he had some business to take care of and that he would come back and get me.
So I said alright.
I walked over to where the Audi was.
The windows were delaminated. The interior was not in good shape. The exterior was beat up. The vehicle barely ran.
It was a complete horror show.
At that point, I told myself there was no reason to even wait for this guy to come back.
I felt disrespected.
So I started walking.
The neighborhood was rough, no question about it. But I was comfortable. I grew up in environments where you learn how to carry yourself, and I always trust my instincts.
I found a cab and went back to the hotel to Maya.
We were both upset at first.
But then we realized… we were in Dubai.
And we were there for two weeks.
So instead of letting it ruin everything… we made the best of it.
Before we even went on that trip, I had already bought Maya a ring. She had absolutely no idea.
A few days later, we went to Nikki Beach.
I asked her to marry me… and she said yes.
What started as a failed business deal… turned into one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

Sometimes the deal isn’t the reason for the trip.
